The purpose of Native Connections is to prevent and reduce suicidal behavior and substance abuse, reduce the impact of trauma, and promote mental health among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) young people up to and including age 24. The goals of this program fall within two of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Strategic Initiatives: Prevention of Substance Abuse and Mental Illness, and Trauma and Justice.
The purpose of this project is to reduce the prevalence of suicide among the AIAN communities within the Ottawa County area by improving care coordination; expanding access to behavioral health care services; and supporting youth at risk for suicidal behavior with prevention activities that reinforce their connection to their cultural identity.
